A Proton Synchrotron Blazar Model for Flaring in Markarian 501
The spectral energy distribution (SED) of blazars typically has a double-humped appearance usually interpreted in terms of synchrotron self-Compton models. In proton blazar models, the SED is instead explained in terms of acceleration of protons and subsequent cascading. We discuss a variation of the Synchrotron Proton Blazar model, first proposed by Mücke & Protheroe (1999), in which the low e...
متن کاملX-ray flaring activity of Markarian 421
We report results from a systematic search for X-ray flares from Mrk 421, using archival data from the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) satellite. The flares are clearly seen over a wide range of timescales. The quasicontinuous coverage of the source with the All-SkyMonitor (ASM) reveals frequent occurrence of major flares that last for months. On a few occasions, the source was intensively m...
متن کاملA Rapid X-ray Flare from Markarian 501.
We present X-ray observations of the BL Lacertae object Mrk 501 that were taken with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer in 1998 May as part of a multiwavelength campaign. The X-ray light curve shows a very rapid flare in which the 2-10 keV flux increased by approximately 60% in less than 200 s. This rapid rise is followed by a drop-off in the 2-10 keV flux of approximately 40% in less than 600 s. ...
متن کاملThe TeV energy spectrum of Markarian 421 measured in a high flaring state
The BL Lac object (blazar) Mrk 421 was observed during its outburst in 2004 April with the Whipple 10 m telescope for a total of about 24.5 hr. The measured g-ray rate varied substantially over the range from 4 to 10 minute 1 and eventually exceeded the steady g-ray rate of the Crab Nebula (standard candle) by a factor of 3. The overall significance of the g-ray signal exceeded 70 j and the tot...
متن کاملTime Dependent Modeling of the Markarian 501 X - ray and TeV Gamma - Ray Data Taken
If the high-energy emission from TeV blazars is produced by the Synchrotron SelfCompton (SSC) mechanism, then simultaneous X-ray and Gamma-ray observations of these objects are a powerful probe of the electron (and/or positron) populations responsible for this emission. Understanding the emitting particle distributions and their evolution in turn allow us to probe physical conditions in the inn...
